When two newly wed brides get exchanged on the way to their groom's home right after marriage, it sets the stage for a humor rich journey of self discovery for the two laapataa ladies. The movie, directed by Kiran Rao, stars Pratibha Ranrta and Nitanshi Goel in the main roles.
The movie is a poignant and terrific social satire drama. Set in the highly male dominated social environment of rural Northern India, the movie tears into how the traditions and religions (plural) have robbed the women of their identity, and thru that, their dreams. The train scene, where one of the grooms is asked "tum ko kitna mila? " (How much did you get) ridicules the dowry system and points out that it is like men selling themselves "to the highest bidder". The scene in the police station mocks the tendency of different political parties changing the names of towns for political milage.
The movie received positive reviews from critics and audience alike, praising it's story, direction, screenplay and acting. Laapataa Ladies won the Best Filin of Indian Film Festival, Melbourne, and was selected as India's entry for the Best International Feature Film in the 97th Academy Awards.
